Steve Ballmer was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 24, 1956. His father, Frederic Henry, was a Swiss immigrant, and his mother, Beatrice, was Belarusian Jewish. In 1973, Ballmer attended Lawrence Technological University before moving on to Harvard University. At Harvard, Ballmer managed the Crimson football team and was a member of the Fox Club. He joined Microsoft on June 11, 1980, after a year at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Career at Microsoft

Steve Ballmer’s career at Microsoft began when his college friend, Bill Gates, persuaded him to take a full-time job rather than a summer internship. Ballmer left Stanford and joined Microsoft, initially focusing on recruiting employees. He played a pivotal role in reorganizing Microsoft’s partnership into a corporate structure, where Gates held 53% of the equity and Ballmer 8%.

In 1980, Ballmer took charge of the Operating System division, crucial to Microsoft’s business. When Microsoft went public in 1986, Ballmer became a multimillionaire. He held various key positions and was promoted to Executive Vice President of Sales and Support in 1992. By 1998, he had risen to President of Microsoft, a position he held until 2001.
