In 1973, Ballmer attended Lawrence Technological University before moving on to Harvard University. At Harvard, Ballmer managed the Crimson football team and was a member of the Fox Club. He joined Microsoft on June 11, 1980, after a year at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Steve Ballmer’s career at Microsoft began when his college friend, Bill Gates, persuaded him to take a full-time job rather than a summer internship. Ballmer left Stanford and joined Microsoft, initially focusing on recruiting employees. He played a pivotal role in reorganizing Microsoft’s partnership into a corporate structure, where Gates held 53% of the equity and Ballmer 8%.
