John Howard Critiques Donald Trump’s Compatibility with Democracy

Former Prime Minister John Howard has publicly stated he cannot support Donald Trump, emphasizing that the ex-president’s refusal to accept the 2020 election results renders him unfit for future elections. In a candid interview with 9News, Howard described Trump’s actions as “not compatible with democracy.”

“In typical circumstances, I would naturally favor a Republican win, but this time, I cannot,” Howard remarked. He likened Trump’s behavior to a cricket player who refuses to accept an umpire’s decision, saying, “I think Donald Trump should have left the field when the umpire’s finger went up.” He stressed the importance of accepting democratic outcomes.

Howard’s comments come after former Vice President Dick Cheney endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, asserting that Trump “can never be trusted with power again.” Howard expressed agreement with Cheney’s sentiments but refrained from endorsing Harris, citing concerns about her economic approach. “I’m not impressed with Kamala Harris. I worry she may lead an administration that overspends and promotes excessive government intervention,” he said.

Reflecting on the current political landscape, Howard noted that the American political system shows significant flaws compared to Australia’s parliamentary model. He asserted, “In a parliamentary system, Donald Trump would never have risen to leadership within the Republican Party, nor would Kamala Harris have led the Democrats.”

With the upcoming election looming, Howard admitted he does not envy American voters, stating, “The choice they face is quite challenging, and I’m glad I don’t have a vote there.”
