Early Life and Education
Peter Kahara Munga was born in 1943 in Kangema, located in Kenya’s Central Province. Raised in a rural setting, Munga developed a strong work ethic that would later define his career. He attended Gaichanjiru High School before advancing his studies in human resources and financial management. His contributions to the banking and business sectors earned him two honorary Doctor of Philosophy degrees: a Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) from the University of Nairobi and a Doctor of Entrepreneurship (Honoris Causa) from Kenya Methodist University.

Founding of Equity Bank
In 1984, Munga established the Equity Building Society (EBS) in his hometown of Kangema with a modest capital of KSh5,000 (approximately US$100 at that time). Despite the humble beginnings, he successfully secured a license from the Kenyan government, laying the foundation for what would later become a banking powerhouse.
By 1993, EBS was struggling financially, with annual losses of KSh5 million (approximately US$60,000) and total accumulated losses of KSh33 million (approximately US$380,000). Munga, in his role as chairman, made a strategic move by hiring James Mwangi as the director of finance. Under Mwangi’s leadership, the institution began a steady turnaround. That same year, Munga resigned from his role as an assistant secretary in Kenya’s Ministry of Water to fully focus on transforming EBS.
Expansion and Growth of Equity Bank
In 2004, EBS transitioned into Equity Bank Group, reflecting its growth and diversification. By 2006, the bank was listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), enhancing its credibility and market presence. Three years later, on June 18, 2009, Equity Bank cross-listed on the Uganda Securities Exchange under the symbol EBL.
By November 2014, the bank had expanded its reach across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan, cementing its position as the largest banking institution on the African continent by customer numbers, boasting over 9.2 million customers as of June 2014.

Investment Portfolio
Apart from his leadership role at Equity Bank, Munga diversified his investments across multiple sectors. As of November 2014, his portfolio included shares in publicly traded companies such as:
- British-American Investments Company (Held through Equity Holdings Limited): 11.9% shareholding valued at approximately US$65 million.
- British-American Investments Company (Held directly): 3.86% shareholding valued at US$21 million.
